Sarkis and Joohar were married on Aug. 29, 1924 in Nuevo Laredo, Mexico. Their marriage was arranged by her brother Setrak Kopoian. The first meeting of the bride and groom was in Mexico prior to their marriage.
Some facts about Joohar:
- She was a refugee from Turkish Armenian holocaust.
- She lived for 6 years with a Turkish family in Aleppo, Syria (after being bought by the Turk who spotted her on the forced death march after she had walked for nearly a year from Harput, Turkey.)
- She left an orphanage in Aleppo, Syria after receiving money from her brothers, travelling to Marseille, France.
- She travelled to Carrollville, Wisconsin USA in a route that took her
from France, to Ellis Island, NY, to Mexico, to Havana, Cuba, to Ellis Island, NY.
- She was one of 13 million people processed through Ellis Island.
- She was one of the 2% that was originally turned away. There was a concern about an eye infection disease.
- She entered the U.S. on Dec. 7, 1924.
This photo could very well be their wedding portrait. There is some Armenian writing found on the back of a photo. Does anyone have access to someone who can read what it says?
